Major & Minor Basilicas Tour
Tour Overview
St. John Lateran, Church of the Holy Steps, Church of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, St. Mary Major, and Santa Praessede.
A spiritual journey or a curious interest in the major beauties in Rome is a good reason to take this tour. You can climb the Holy Stairs and can obtain a partial indulgence by doing so.
It lasts 4 hours. The tour moves at an easy pace, so we can include a quick snack or just a drink. All these churches are within walking distance and have no entrance fee.
-
The Cathedral of Rome is the Pope’s official seat, the Bishop of Rome’s church. Simple yet stunningly designed by Borromini, Bernini’s rival, whose lucid architectural style is ostensibly and refreshingly different from all other Baroque architects.
-
The revered steps are believed to be the ones Christ climbed during His Passion in Jerusalem.
-
Built by Emperor Constantine for his mother, St. Helen, who returned from Jerusalem with pieces of the Cross of Christ and other relics, places them in this minor basilica.
-
The largest basilica in Rome is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Consequently, one of the most beautifully designed and decorated early Christian churches in Rome.
-
Two extraordinary pieces tug us into this basilica: a very symbolic apsidal early Christian mosaic that illuminates the piety and eschatological understanding of the early Christians. Also inside is the relic of the column upon which Christ was flagellated. In imitation, relics of two great saints are shown and remembered.
