It is best to spend five to seven days in Rome.
There is more to see here than in other cities in Italy. After Rome, you can take a holiday!

This is primarily for cruise ships. Ancient Rome Tour including the Colosseum and Vatican City including the Sistine Chapel would be between 6 to 8 hours with/o private transport.
Ancient Rome, Vatican City, and the Historic and Fascinating City Center Tour
In addition to Ancient Rome, Vatican City, and the Historic and Fascinating City Center Tour, try the Off the Beaten Path Tour.
Ancient Rome, Vatican City, and the Historic and Fascinating City Center, Off the Beaten Path, Major Basilica Tour & Lives of the Saints, also could be included Caravaggio tour and/or Borghese Galleries.
You can have a free day to relax, wander around, do some cooking classes, savour its delights, and visit areas outside of Rome like Castel Gandolfo, Nemi, Frascati, Tivoli and more galleries in Rome which safeguard original Roman statues, mosaics and frescoes that were originally aristocratic families pride and joy —all at a more leisurely pace!!
Naturally, taking a sabbatical or long vacation of 3 to 6 weeks in Rome and visiting other cities, towns, lake or seaside resorts would be ideal, not to mention out of this world!
If you return to Rome for the second or third time, there is nothing wrong with revisiting sites as you understand them better and appreciate them in a different way. However, if you want to see more of Rome, I can certainly recommend a slew of places to visit on your own or with a guide.
