Caravaggio Tour
Tour Overview
Caravaggio was the artist whom we imagine all artists to be: A sword-carrying buccaneer who sported expensive silks, velvets, and leather, albeit weathered and worn, and with a feather in his cap, he tried people’s patience and challenged the establishment with his art and behaviour. He threw insults at men he didn’t like, dated disreputable women, and got into fights, duels, and hospitals for his injuries. He was a man unto himself whose innovative style incensed the covetous aristocracy and men of the cloth. He never had his own workshop or started a school of art, but his painting created a whole new genre, generating a series of followers whom he never sought , because he was so consumed being himself and working on his art. On the tour you will see his works in situ, and where he lived, played and fought!
On the 2-hour tour, you will see six of his major works in Rome which can be seen free of charge because they are in churches, and all within walking distance of each other. Paintings to be viewed are: The Calling of Mathew, The Martydom of Mathew, The Divine Inspiration of Mathew, Madanno del Palaferini, the Crucifixion of Peter and The Conversion of St. Paul.
