Castel Sant’Angelo
& the Bridge of the Angels Tour
Tour Overview
Castle San Angelo is a 'bulwark' of a monument, almost a citadel, that was born as an imperial tomb turned into a castle to protect Popes who guarded the treasures of the Church against foreign invaders and local opponents, and whose solid structure defended the people from criminals and heretics. It is ceremoniously and spiritually reached by the Bridge of Angels that peaks with a classic panoramic view of Rome at its summit.
In keeping with its raison d'etre, the short tour, lasting 1.5 hours, can climax under the statue of St. Michael the Archangel with a prayer to protect us from all evil.
Prison cells, storage rooms and the treasure room are open on special visits with a guide.
In the summer, the Leonine wall is also open to visitors on a guided tour. It was originally built in the 9th AD as a connection to the Castle giving one a curious experience of privilege and surveillance!
